NY SUN NAIL GUIDE
File-Off vs Soak-Off Builder Gel: What to Know
By NY SUN Nails
Before buying builder gel, check how the exact formula is removed. “Builder gel” alone does not tell you whether a product is file-off or soak-off. That detail matters when planning your nail routine, choosing products and deciding how you will have them removed.
The quick answer: NY SUN Fast Flow 01 Clear and Slow Flow 02 Clear both specify file-off removal. Their different names describe flow during application, not different removal methods.
What do file-off and soak-off mean?
File-off describes a product whose removal instructions call for filing away the gel. Soak-off describes a formula designed for a manufacturer-specified remover process. Follow the directions for the exact product and system rather than borrowing a removal method from another gel.
A soak-off label does not necessarily mean that no filing is involved. For example, some manufacturers specify filing the topcoat before soaking. Likewise, a system can combine a file-off builder layer with another layer that has different removal instructions.
| What to check | File-off formula | Soak-off formula |
|---|---|---|
| Main removal approach | Filing, following the product’s instructions. | The remover process specified for that formula. |
| Can you choose by the product name alone? | No. Confirm the stated removal method. | No. Check the complete removal directions. |
| Can other layers affect the process? | Check instructions for the whole product system. | Check whether topcoat or other layers require separate preparation. |
Which removal method do NY SUN builder gels use?
Both NY SUN options below are transparent builder gels in 30g jars, with filing listed as the removal method:
- Fast Flow 01 Clear Builder Gel: faster flow during application, suited to experienced nail technicians.
- Slow Flow 02 Clear Builder Gel: slower flow during application, suited to beginners and at-home users who prefer a slower-moving formula.
If soak-off removal is a requirement for you, check that requirement before ordering. The NY SUN products above are specified for file-off removal. A slower-flowing gel does not change the removal method.

Four questions to ask before buying
- What is the stated removal method? Look for instructions for the exact formula, rather than assuming all builder gels remove alike.
- Which other products are part of the system? Check the base, builder and topcoat instructions together.
- Which application consistency fits your experience? Treat flow and removal as two separate decisions.
- Have you confirmed the lamp and full-curing instructions? A flow name is not a curing schedule. Confirm product-specific requirements before use.
New users should plan how they will have the product removed before choosing a formula. If you need help with removal technique, ask a trained nail technician for guidance.
Common questions
Does every builder gel soak off?
No. Check the manufacturer’s directions for the exact formula. Builder gels can have different removal methods.
Does Slow Flow mean easier soak-off removal?
No. Slow Flow describes the way the NY SUN gel flows during application. Both NY SUN Fast Flow and Slow Flow list filing as their removal method.
Does Fast Flow mean faster full curing?
No. The name describes application flow. A positioning flash cure must be followed by a separate full cure; flash curing alone does not complete the process.
